Henri Bendel To
Host Trunk Show For Jacques Fath’s F/W 2011
Collection
Friday, October 28 Through Sunday, October 30
Please Join Jacques
Fath Head Designer, Laurence Dumenil, On The 2nd
Floor For A Look At The Fall/Winter 2011 Collection
In the prime
of his career, Jacques Fath’s couture gowns
were carried at Bendel’s over 50 years ago.
Henri Bendel is now proud
to welcome back the designs from the house of Jacques
Fath into its famed townhouse at 712 Fifth Avenue.
Women have been looking to Bendel’s since
1895 to find the latest “it” bag to
carry on their arm. Finally, Jacques Fath has returned.
Jacques Fath established
The House of Fath in Paris in 1937. He is widely
considered one of the 3 most influential postwar
French fashion designers along with his contemporaries,
Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain. Fath’s
eccentric personality, taste for decadence, and
attention to detail had him branded the “Little
Prince of Paris Haute Couture”. Fath is often
credited with bringing French prêt-a-porter
to America while dressing top celebrities of his
time, such as Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner and Rita
Hayworth. The House of Fath closed in 1957 following
the couturier’s untimely death.
Today, after more
than 50 years, the innovative designs of Jacques
Fath are breathing new life under the direction
of Head Accessory Designer, Laurence Dumenil. A
stunning collection of handbags and clutches has
made its debut in the American market. Dumenil has
updated the vintage Fath aesthetic with her edgy,
modern and fresh approach to details. Handmade in
a family-owned factory in Angers, France the collection
features rich embossed leathers, lizard & python
skins, wooden closures and jeweled clasps.
A new generation
of fashionable celebrities has discovered the alluring
designs of Jacques Fath. Sienna Miller was recently
spotted carrying the Fidelity clutch to the British
Fashion Awards in London. The Fidelity will be among
the gorgeous array of handbags you will find at
Henri Bendel from October 28 to 30.

FASHION DESIGNER FABIOLA
ARIAS
WINS GOLD COAST FASHION AWARD 2011
Fabiola Arias has won The
Gold Coast Fashion Award for best designer. Previous
Gold Coast winners have included Bibhu Mohapatra
in 2010, Angel Sanchez in '96, and Donna Karan in
'88.
Earlier this year,
Fabiola received Fashion Group International's Rising
Star Award for women's wear.
Fabiola Arias is a manifestation of the artistic
background of its designer. Fabiola's unique and
signature use of texture and surface treatment is
visible in her cocktail and evening wear pieces.
The dissatisfaction
from common fabrics inspire Arias to experiment,
cut, twist, pleat, shred, scratch, distress and
collage plain fabrics to look like complete works
of art.
When she was studying at Parsons the New School
for Design, Fabiola decided to launch her own line
which was initially picked up by Ikram in Chicago.
Fabiola Arias' Fall 2011 collection can be bought
at the Neiman Marcus Couture Salon across the country.

as, a long form documentary film, CRAEFT which provided
an unparalleled behind-the-scenes look at the label's
preparations for their Fall 2011 show at New York
Fashion Week. The project airs exclusively on Hulu
Movies. CHIC.TV has also produced several shorter
format videos for Ports including PORTS 1961 JOURNEYS,
which followed the brand to London for a Harvey
Nichols boutique launch and Helsinki for a campaign
photo shoot.
A proven editor of
fashion design and luxury marketing, Jacqui Wenzel
brings with her years of successful industry experience.
Starting her career as a buyer for high-end department
stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel, she
understands the importance of careful editing, the
subtle details that establish a brand and the challenge
of promoting a designer's image, such as Stephen
Sprouse and Romeo Gigli, within the structure of
sales and profit accountability.
In 2004 Wenzel was
appointed as VP of US Operations and, later, President
at Ports 1961 where she lead a core team in establishing
the label in the US and abroad, including launching
boutiques at Bloomingdale's New York and Harvey
Nichols London. While at Ports 1961, the brand presented
several times at New York Fashion Week, received
numerous editorials in leading fashion magazines
and collaborated with fashion insiders, socialites
and celebrities such as Glenda Bailey, Joe Zee,
Olivia Palermo and Arrianna Huffington.
"I'm ecstatic
that Jacqui Wenzel is joining our team." says
Rami Rinot, CEO of CHIC.TV. "We've worked with
her on many social media and video productions for
Ports 1961. Jacqui's vision of brand engagement
through social media aligns with CHIC.TV's strategy.
What particularly struck me about Jacqui is that
she understands the importance of the "cool
factor" in marketing any fashion brand. Because
of this understanding, married with her tremendous
roots in the fashion industry, I'm confident she
will be invaluable in helping CHIC.TV to secure
our position as a leading media outlet for the the
industry".

Alison Deyette
Here are some layering
tips from Alison Deyette:
· Belts will become
your best friends when creating layered looks. Whether
you opt for a skinny or wide style, belts will create
a waist, define your curves and reign in extra fabric
to avoid an unflattering rectangle effect.
· The trick
to maintaining a slimmer look when layering is to
altogether avoid oversized, bulky or extremely puffy
items.
· When layering
two sweaters, make sure the inner layer is a thin,
close-fitting knit so the outer layer can resemble
more of a jacket or coat.
· If you’re
layering more than two pieces at a time, keep the
fabric on your arms smooth and not bulky or wrinkled.
This will balance out your look so you don’t
accidentally add the appearance of extra pounds
on top.
· The best
way to top off layered looks is with a hot new coat
that puts a trendy spin on a tried-and-true classic.
o For an updated
long, wool coat, look for a modernized version with
a wide shawl collar and belt. Try something different
like a light gray. It’s still neutral enough
to go with everything in your closet, but a bit
fresher than your standard black.
o It is possible
to find both form and function in a toasty puffy
coat. A puffer with a snug fit and built-in belt
will creates a cinching effect at your waistline
which accentuates the narrowest part of your body.

The Body Shop recently launched
the second phase of its campaign to stop child trafficking
with the help of Academy Award-winning actress and
activist Susan Sarandon.
Every year, at least 1.2 million children and young
people are trafficked around the world, even right
here in the U.S. Sex trafficking is now the third-largest
and fastest-growing criminal industry in the world
after illegal drugs and arms trafficking.
Currently, child victims of trafficking are only
protected in New York, Connecticut, and Washington
state from being charged, prosecuted, or incarcerated
for prostitution.
The original, natural,
ethical beauty brand has joined forces with ECPAT
USA and the Somaly Mam Foundation to launch a petition
that will be presented to the U.S. government and
the United Nations. To put a stop to sex trafficking,
The Body Shop is asking customers and supporters
to go to their local The Body Shop store or online
at http://petition.thebodyshop-usa.com/sign-petition.php
to sign the petition. The Body Shop has already
earned over 26,000 signatures in the U.S. alone
and is continuing to gain momentum to reach 1 million.
You can also take
a stand and help make strides to end child trafficking
with the Soft Hands Kind Heart Hand Cream, a protective
hand cream infused with soothing angelica extract
and Community Trade Olive Oil from Italy, now available
in a smaller travel size. Approximately $5 from
each purchase (100% of net proceeds) of the special
edition non-greasy moisturizing formula is donated
to ECPAT USA.
Or show your support
in style with the new “Stop Sex Trafficking
of Children and Young People” Bag for Life,
retailing for only $5. 100% of the net proceeds
from the sales of The Body Shop Bag for Life go
to the Somaly Mam Foundation to support anti-trafficking
activities and survivor rescue, shelter, recovery,
and empowerment programs around the world.

From IMG:
PLANS UNVEILED FOR
FIRST SEASON OF MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK AT LINCOLN
CENTER
IMG announced
today plans for its first season of Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week in Lincoln Center’s Damrosch
Park at a fashion industry briefing supported by
The City of New York, Lincoln Center and the Council
of Fashion Designers of America. The move to Lincoln
Center has allowed IMG Fashion to unveil event upgrades
such as modernized production capabilities for designers,
digital services concurrent with the advanced needs
of the 21st Century, better accessibility for attendees
through both public and private transportation and
great resources/facilities on-site and in the surrounding
areas.
The move to Lincoln
Center comes after extensive work between City Hall,
Lincoln Center, the New York City Department of
Parks and Recreation, New York City Economic Development
Corporation (NYCEDC), IMG and the Council of Fashion
Designers of America.
“This is a
very exciting day for us,” said Peter Levy,
Senior Vice President and Managing Director of IMG
Fashion Worldwide. “The move has allowed IMG
to reinvent and improve so many aspects of Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week as well as develop a stronger link
to the surrounding facitilies and spaces available
at Lincoln Center and the neighborhood. This is
the first season in what we are confident will be
a long ‘run’ at Lincoln Center.”
Said Stephanie Winston
Wolkoff, Director of Fashion, Lincoln Center, “We
are delighted to provide Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
with a new home and an extraordinary array of possibilities.
Over the past few years, Lincoln Center has undergone
a transformation, resulting in a campus that is
aesthetically spectacular as well as extremely accessible.
We look forward to providing the fashion industry
with one central location for activities in and
around the tents. In addition, we plan to welcome
consumers with a dynamic array of opportunities
to engage with the art of fashion.”
“The move to
Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center is the culmination
of a working partnership between the Mayor’s
Office, NYCEDC, IMG, Lincoln Center, and the Department
of Parks and Recreation,” said Patrick M.
Murphy, Director of the Fashion/Retail Team at the
Center for Economic Transformation at NYCEDC. “The
enhancements to the tents, the ability to stage
additional presentations, along with access to major
transportation routes, and the connection with the
Lincoln Center brand will be a terrific boost for
the fashion industry, and will have a positive economic
impact for the event and the City.”
“The industry
support and innovation being utilized to transform
Lincoln Center into the new home of Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week is a testament to New York City’s
premier status among the greatest fashion capitals
of the world," said Stephen Cannon, Vice President
of Marketing for Mercedes-Benz USA. “Our commitment
to the event’s success will continue as we
officially announce today that Mercedes-Benz is
renewing a three year agreement with IMG to remain
title sponsor.”
Mercedes-Benz Fashion
Week at Lincoln Center, which will be held from
September 9 to 16, will implement a number of technical
enhancements to adjust with the changing needs of
the fashion community. These upgrades include; a
gracious lobby to better accommodate designer guests,
press and industry professionals; modified runway
theaters and modular designer spaces that support
advanced production capabilities; expanded lighting
and digital design resources; new décor and
increased venue/runway sizes and seating enhancements.
The event will continue to host three runway venues,
and has added a fourth presentation space for designer
presentations, industry forums, press conferences
and other activities. The venue cost to each designer
will remain the same as in previous seasons of Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week.
IMG Fashion will
extend ‘the Tents’ original mantra to
‘organize, centralize and modernize’
into the digital realm, launching a new Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week at Lincoln Center website and suite
of digital services that provide expanded capabilities
for designers, press and attendees. These improvements
include a new designer centric website and updated
registration and credentialing system synchronized
with designer seating. The digitization of the event
will further streamline the communication between
the different constituencies, providing up to the
minute resources for press registration, press contact
details for designers, online RSVP and show check-in
capabilities.
Lincoln Center allows
a unique opportunity in the evolution of the event,
offering expanded resources and facilities around
campus for the use of designer, press, industry
and consumer activities. Inside the Tents, the site
will feature increase lounge style seating in the
event lobby and an outdoor garden for events and
presentations as well as a number of restaurants,
cafes and sitting areas around the Lincoln Center
campus. Lincoln Center also provides attendees with
convenient transportation and access to the event
via the MTA’s subway systems, busses, the
West Side Highway and light traffic flow on 9th
Avenue (Columbus) and 10th Avenue (Amsterdam) making
the hectic week of shows as effortless as possible
for all attendees.
The City, working
with IMG Fashion and Lincoln Center, has embarked
on a coordinated effort to ensure Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week takes place in an efficient and organized
manner. Led by the Citywide Event Coordination and
Management Office, City agencies – including
the Transportation, Police, Fire, Buildings, Parks
and Recreation and Sanitation Departments together
with the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit,
and New York City Economic Development Corporation
(NYCEDC) – are coordinating issues related
to pedestrian access, ancillary parking, community
resources, traffic flow, and opportunities for local
businesses.
Each year, the 232,000
attendees at Fashion Weeks generate new economic
activity for New York City businesses, accounting
for more than $466 million in direct visitor spending
and contributing to $1.6 billion in annual tax revenue
to the City’s fashion industry. For the businesses
surrounding Lincoln Center specifically –
the restaurants, hotels, and retailers – as
well as the thousands of caterers, security, and
service workers staffing the shows, relocating Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week will result in economic benefits. More
than $40 million annually is spent on meals at local
restaurants; nearly $30 million on taxis, Town Cars,
and public transportation; and an additional $56
million at area hotels.

from Kira Kohrherr of K Public Relations LLC:

Fabiola Arias launched
her Fashion Week debut collection yesterday at an
intimate showcase at AVEnts Studio, located near
Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. The line
showcased a mix of imaginative and wearable pieces
in a color palette of muted creams and soft blues
to deeper reds and blacks. Meticulously layering
silk organza, tulle and chiffon, Fabiola’s
spring collection of cocktail and evening wear reflects
her signature esthetic of adding intricate detail
and texture to classic silhouettes.
By combining her
passion for paint and garment work, Fabiola staged
the models as a living art instillation. Playing
with height and drama, Fabiola’s debut showcase
featured a theatrical vignette where models adorned
with Fabiola’s signature head pieces decorated
the white wall of the antique hall. Inspired by
the mysticism and allure of Afro-Cuban Santeria,
each garments in the spring collection is named
after a deity and will be available in March 2010.
Additionally, Fabiola has been selected as a participating
designer for the 2nd annual SHINMAI Creator’s
Project. As one of four designers chosen, Arias
has been given the opportunity to show her Fall
2010 collection at Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo.

Cupcake Design by Rebecca

REBECCA TAYLOR FOR BILLY’S
BAKERY
CUSTOM CUPCAKES FOR MOTHER’S DAY
Rebecca Taylor and
Billy’s Bakery have partnered to design limited
edition cupcakes for Mother’s Day. Billy’s
Bakery and Rebecca Taylor’s impeccable service
and commitment to quality have made them both stand
outs in the New York City area; providing customers
with exceptional products for any occasion. Having
an almost obsessive eye to detail and an unconventional
color sense, Rebecca and Billy’s bakers created
two tasty confections: Vanilla Twinkle and Mocha
Meow.
Rebecca’s inspiration
for the design of each cupcake originated from her
Spring/Summer 2009 runway collection. “The
Rebecca Taylor girl for Spring/Summer 2009 is a
bohemian world traveler,” says Rebecca. The
collection includes mixed ethnic prints with a feminine
twist in pretty, dreamy colors. Vanilla Twinkle
by Rebecca Taylor is a light, dreamy treat, made
of Billy’s yellow daisy cupcake topped with
blue vanilla buttercream and a sprinkle of white
crystal sugar and silver dots, which imitates the
blue dot chiffon dress from the runway. Mocha Meow
was created from Billy’s chocolate cupcake
and special Mocha-flavored buttercream with dark
and light chocolate sprinkles, resembling the leopard
printed pieces in the collection.
Rebecca Taylor’s
sexy, kittenish clothing and feminine edgy, yet
approachable designs have put her collection on
the fashion map, garnering major editorial coverage
as well as a nod from the Council of Fashion Designers
of America. Billy’s Bakery, founded in 2003,
provides customers with classic American baked goods
made with the highest quality ingredients.
The Rebecca Taylor
Mother’s Day cupcakes are $2.75/piece and
will be available beginning May 1st at Billy’s.
Billy’s Bakery is located at 184 9th Avenue
New York, NY 10011. Billy's new location on 75 Franklin

About Charlotte
Ronson
Born in London into
an artistic family and raised in New York, Charlotte
Ronson followed the tradition by developing her
own unique style at an early age. In 2000, the C.
Ronson collection evolved into a playful mix of
70’s inspired cotton tees, tooshies (novelty
lingerie pieces) and coveted wedge heels that put
her on the map as a designer to be noticed. The
collection gained instant recognition and the attention
of renowned publications such as Vogue, Elle, Teen
Vogue, WWD and the New York Times. In May 2002,
Ronson opened her flagship boutique on Elizabeth
Street in New York’s hip NoLita neighborhood,
gathering additional international press coverage.

MAYOR BLOOMBERG
ANNOUNCES NEW HOME FOR FASHION WEEK AT LINCOLN CENTER
Agreement to Host
Biannual Events at Larger Space in Damrosch Park
Area Starting
Fall 2010 Will
Allow Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to Continue to
Grow in New York City
New York’s
Fashion Week Generates $773 Million in Economic
Activity,
Supporting the City’s
Fashion Industry and its 175,000 Jobs
Mayor Michael R.
Bloomberg today announced an agreement to move New
York City’s biannual Mercedes-Benz Fashion
Week events to Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center.
The agreement between IMG Fashion and Lincoln Center,
Inc. will allow the shows to relocate from Bryant
Park to Damrosch Park beginning in September 2010.
Until then, the event will take place at Bryant
Park, including the Fall 2009 collections which
begin February 13. The City, through the Office
of First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris, worked
with IMG Fashion and the Council of Fashion Designers
of America (CFDA) to identify a new location as
it became clear the shows would soon outgrow the
facilities at Bryant Park. The Mayor made the announcement
at a conference about the future of New York City
hosted by Crain’s New York Business and the
Partnership for New York City, and he was joined
by Council of Fashion Designers of America President
Diane von Furstenberg, IMG Fashion Senior Vice President
Fern Mallis, Lincoln Center President Reynold Levy,
Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, New York City
Economic Development Corporation President Seth
W. Pinsky and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate
D. Levin.
“The fashion
industry is a vital part of our City’s economy,
providing more than 175,000 jobs and generating
billions of dollars in wages for New Yorkers annually,”
said Mayor Bloomberg. “Ensuring the industry’s
long-term success and promoting Fashion Week –
the industry’s greatest showcase – is
more important than ever as we work to retain and
create jobs during these difficult times and diversify
the City’s economy. We were determined to
work with the Council of Fashion Designers of America
and IMG Fashion to identify a location for Fashion
Week that would allow it to grow and thrive in New
York City, and we could not have arrived at more
ideal location than Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center.”
The new venue at
Damrosch Park, which is managed by Lincoln Center,
will provide about 87,000 square feet of space for
the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week shows, compared to
the
roughly 70,000 square
feet available at Bryant Park – a 25 percent
increase. The agreement between IMG Fashion and
Lincoln Center is for five years. In addition to
providing more space in Damrosch Park, Lincoln Center
provides ample opportunity for its iconic indoor
locations to be used for special events during the
shows.
The collections,
which began being shown in New York City’s
Bryant Park in 1993 with about 35 shows, have grown
dramatically to about 70 shows per season, showcasing
the leading American and international designers.
Last year, the two annual events drew 232,000 attendees,
generated $466 million in direct visitor spending,
and resulted in an overall economic impact on New
York City of $773 million. New York City’s
fashion industry provides 175,000 jobs, $1.6 billion
in annual tax revenue and $10 billion in total wages.
More than 800 fashion companies are headquartered
in New York City, more than double the number headquartered
in Paris, its next closest competitor.
“The CFDA is
so pleased that the fashion show tents are moving
to Lincoln Center. The shows are the main showcase
for American fashion and to be part of this cultural
center is exciting,” said CFDA President Diane
von Furstenberg. “The proximity and visibility
of Lincoln Center ensures the industry remains at
the forefront of worldwide fashion. Without the
centralized location and additional venues provided
by Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center
it would be impossible to accommodate the almost
250 designers who show in New York City.”
“As
our society is embracing the concept of change,
the time has come for us tooto change,” said
IMG Fashion Senior Vice President Fern Mallis. “With
our new home at Lincoln Center, we can re-invent,
invigorate and reinforce fashion’s rightful
place alongside the many creative disciplines, from
music and dance, to opera and film, which also call
world renowned Lincoln Center home.”
“We are extremely
grateful to the Mayor, not only for his leadership
in facilitating Fashion Week’s move to Lincoln
Center, but also for his strong commitment to Lincoln
Center and the arts,” said Lincoln Center
President Reynold Levy. “Fashion Week will
be an outstanding addition to our newly transformed
campus making Lincoln Center more welcoming, more
accessible and transparent. All of us are delighted
that the fashion industry will be a part of Lincoln
Center’s annual calendar. We warmly welcome
its leadership, and we pledge to deliver the highest
standard of customer service to all its members.”
The move will coincide
with enhancements to Damrosch Park in conjunction
with the reconstruction underway at Lincoln Center
which is being transformed with revitalized performance,
educational and public spaces designed by world
class architects. The dramatic entrance at Josie
Robertson Plaza will provide easy access to events
at the performing arts organizations of Lincoln
Center. It will have one of the largest underground
parking garages in New York City and feature convenient
drop off locations. With more green spaces, Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week’s almost 10,000 daily guests
will be able to linger and enjoy any number of dining
facilities at various price points. The move will
also mean that Bryant Park, one of the few green
spaces in midtown, can better meet the increasing
demand for public programming.
“We’re
excited to host Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at its
new home in Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center,”
said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian
Benepe. “Fashion Week at Damrosch Park is
sure to continue New York City’s status as
the epicenter of the fashion world. Not only is
Damrosch Park a larger site, the park’s hard-surface
plaza is better suited for tented events, thus freeing
up the lawn at Bryant Park for more passive recreational
use.”
“This
agreement is wonderful news for the City, the fashion
industry and Lincoln Center,” said NYCEDC
President Seth W. Pinsky. “It clearly underscores
this Administration’s commitment to this vital
component of our economy and reinforces New York
City’s place as the Fashion Capital of the
World. I am pleased that EDC had a role in negotiating
this important agreement, which will provide the
shows with a new and glamorous home in the City
for the foreseeable future.”

BROOKLYN MUSEUM
ANNOUNCES LANDMARK COSTUME COLLECTION PARTNERSHIP
WITH METROPOLITAN MUSEUM
Brooklyn, New York,
December 16, 2008--The Brooklyn Museum announced
today a landmark collection-sharing partnership
with The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Effective January
2009, the Brooklyn Museum's renowned costume collection
of 23,500 objects, amassed during more than a century
of collecting, will be transferred to The Costume
Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where
it will be known as The Brooklyn Museum Costume
Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Works
from the collection will be fully integrated into
The Costume Institute's program of exhibitions,
publications, and education initiatives.
Brooklyn's collection
constitutes perhaps the world's foremost holdings
of American fashion from the late 19th to the mid-20th
century. Director Arnold Lehman stated: "This
landmark collaboration will create a model for similar
museum partnerships both nationally and internationally.
We are deeply grateful to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
for providing funding that made it possible for
us to develop careful long-term plans for optimal
stewardship of these extraordinary holdings."
Supported by an Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation grant of $3,925,000, the Brooklyn
Museum has just completed an intensive 3-year assessment
and photographic documentation of the entire costume
collection. Not only will the collection be physically
joined with that of the Metropolitan Museum, but
portions of the collection will also be made internationally
available digitally through ARTstor, an online initiative
(created by the Mellon Foundation) that provides
access to art images and related data for scholarly
and not-for-profit educational use.
Brooklyn's costume
collection includes a definitive collection of Charles
James material, as well as signature objects by
America's most famous designers. Extraordinary sub-collections
of Belle Époque material and designs by international
fashion icons such as Elsa Schiaparelli, exceptional
wardrobes formed by major collectors such as Millicent
Rogers, and extensive collections of hats and shoes
add to the significance of Brooklyn's rich collection.
When the Brooklyn collection is housed and displayed,
and interpreted together with the Metropolitan Museum's
Costume Institute collection of more than 31,000
costumes and accessories, particularly strong in
European holdings and avant-garde contemporary fashion,
the combined resources will form the single largest
and most comprehensive costume collection in the
world. (The Brooklyn Museum will retain all of its
renowned non-Western costumes, as well as all non-fashion
textiles.)
"For over a
decade - and as a guiding principle - the Brooklyn
Museum's Trustees and senior management have set
the highest priority on insuring the appropriate
environment, exemplary stewardship, and broad access
to this invaluable and fragile resource. After carefully
considering various alternatives, we concluded that
we could best accomplish our goals by sharing the
collection with an institution whose experience
with a similarly rich collection is already exceptional,
and where the combination of these two outstanding
collections would contribute to a deeper understanding
of Western culture," commented Dr. Lehman.
Stated Director Philippe
de Montebello and Director-Elect Thomas P. Campbell
of The Metropolitan Museum of Art: "That two
great New York institutions, after decades of collecting
costume in parallel, are now joining together to
combine their resources into the single largest
and most comprehensive costume collection in the
world, is a landmark event indeed. We thank Arnold
Lehman for his vision in forging this collaboration
between the Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan,
and the Trustees of the Brooklyn Museum for their
exceptional support. It is a partnership that will
enlighten and engage scholars, students, and the
public of both institutions for generations to come."
"Following their
deliberate and highly professional evaluation and
documentation of the collection as well as assessment
of its future stewardship needs, the decision of
Brooklyn's Trustees and Director to transfer these
extraordinary holdings to the Metropolitan Museum
holds enormous promise for the future of international
scholarship and understanding in this field. The
conditions for mutual use of the combined collections
have been carefully established, and the Web-based
archive will facilitate access to these materials
in unprecedented ways," said Angelica Rudenstine
of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Four thousand stellar
costumes have been selected out of the total Brooklyn
Museum collection for special presentation. These
costumes have been photographed in high resolution
and will be made available as soon as possible through
ARTstor. The Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan
Museum also plan to publish a fully illustrated
book documenting highlights of the collection, and
all 4,000 objects will be featured on a discrete
section of the Metropolitan Museum's Web site with
links to the Brooklyn Museum site.
An exhibition of
the Brooklyn material is planned for 2010 at the
Metropolitan Museum and will be the focus of The
Costume Institute's annual gala that year. A simultaneous
exhibition will be presented at the Brooklyn Museum
as a collaborative project between the two museums.
Other plans include the organization of a traveling
exhibition, an international symposium about the
landmark collaboration between the two collections,
and the publication of symposium papers in the inaugural
issue of The Costume Institute's online journal.
Harold Koda, Curator-in-Charge
of The Costume Institute, stated: "The pairing
of these two collections marks a significant moment
in the rich history of each. The costume collections
of the Brooklyn Museum and The Metropolitan Museum
of Art have strengths that are mutually enhancing.
By integrating them, an unrivaled timeline of Western
fashion history has been created, an incredible
resource not only for the design community in New
York City, but for the public and students of fashion
everywhere."
Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection
The Brooklyn Museum
costume collection was founded in 1902 with the
goal of providing inspiration to American industry.
For the next 80 years, through its Department of
Industrial Design, its Design Lab, and its Department
of Costumes and Textiles, the Museum served as one
of the most important centers in the United States
for the study and collecting of fashion. The stature
and quality of the collection also inspired a number
of great American designers to deposit their archives
at the Museum. In addition to being an outstanding
assemblage of individual works of great rarity and
aesthetic quality, with masterpieces by Worth, Paul
Poiret, Lanvin, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Charles
James, Norman Norell, and Claire McCardell, the
collection documents the consolidation and growing
international importance of the fashion industry
in New York City.
The Costume Institute
Founded
in 1937, The Museum of Costume Art, after its incorporation
and renaming as The Costume Institute, became a
part of the Metropolitan Museum in 1946. Currently
it contains a collection of more than 31,000 pieces
dating from the 17th century to the present, including
fashionable dress and regional costumes from Europe,
Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The Costume Institute
organizes two or three exhibitions each year, which
receive international recognition. Involved in art-historical
research since its founding, The Costume Institute
contributes to scholarship through a range of publications.
