Williamsburg’s galleries rival Chelsea’s compressed selection of fine art show houses. There are over twenty galleries in Williamsburg, some eccentric, some small and plain, but all of them have a Brooklyn flavor. I call it the "Mutiny of Manhattan"; that island is sinking (not really) and becoming more and more compact and predictable. Here in Brooklyn, many artistic outcasts relate the idea of being in Brooklyn to a form of self-expression and choice. We do not want to be lumped together with evil juggernauts that take over white walls and high cathedral ceilings; we want cramped closets full of trinkets and baubles; we want offensive and irreverent fuel for social thought; we want fire for the kindling.
