The Godfather of Soul was brought home to the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York on Thursday, December 28, 2006. The Apollo Theater gave Brown his start and according to the New York Times, Brown's lifelong friend, the Reverend Al Sharpton, drove all night to bring the body from Georgia to New York so Brown could lie in state at the Apollo. Once the body arrived in New York, it was transferred to a white horse drawn glass carriage for the last leg of his journey on 125th Street. Then the body was carried inside the Apollo Theater to lie in state and be viewed by thousand of adoring fans, many who had arrive as early as 4:30 in the morning.
