Ebony Wild Interviews Danny
and Daniel of Apollo Heights
Apollo Heights plays without a drummer.
As singer Daniel Chavez explained, “That’s
one less person to pay.” But they do have
three guitarists: Danny Chavez; Honeychild Coleman;
and Monk. And there’s Micah Gaugh on keys,
saxophone, and backing vocals and Daniel Chavez
on lead vocals. That’s right – Danny
and Daniel Chavez. They’re brothers and they
are identical twins.

Daniel Chavez
Danny and Daniel Chavez, or The Danny’s
as they’re known by friends, hail from Apollo
Heights, North Carolina. Just out of high school,
they joined the Veldt and soon were off on tour
opening for the Cocteaux Twins. Their music reflects
their 80's new wave/shoegaze roots with a wall of
sound, guitar melodies and
hollow-hitting electronic beats. The vocals are
pure soul.
Daniel Chavez and Monk
A laptop provides the rhythm section – fuzz
guitar, melodic lines and rhythm guitar play well
with Daniel’s powerful and beautiful vocals.
Range, tone, and conviction were the muscle behind
the lyrics which were delivered with grace when
they performed the first night of Afropunk at CMJ.
Clear, soulful singing shone over the unexpected
backdrop of fuzzed out, shoegazer rock. Or as Daniel
put it – “White music for black people.”
