Greetings Theater Lovers,
This month I saw two plays: Douglas Carter Beane’s
hysterically funny The Little Dog Laughed
and an off-Broadway holiday show called Striking
12.
First The Little Dog Laughed (see review).
This play boasts a stellar cast and
a fun sophisticated script. The play is also blessed
with an amazing actress in the part of the agent,
Julie White. And you can walk away with a slightly
quizzical look on your face as you ponder the question
of just which closeted gay Hollywood star is Beane
really skewering?
Little Dog has an open run at the Cort
Theater 138 West 48th Street New York,
NY 10036. Ticket Prices are$26.25-$96.25 at www.telecharge.com
212-239-6200 or 800-432-7250. For more information:

Striking 12
The it was on to Striking 12 which is
running at the Daryl Roth Theatre in Union Square.
Here is a quote from their press release: “Striking
12 is the story of a Grumpy Guy who decides
to avoid the hectic, loveless world on New Year's
Eve, until he’s visited by an incandescent
salesgirl with the promise to chase away his winter
doldrums. Combining pop-rock, musical comedy and
old-fashioned uplift with a healthy dose of 21st-century
skepticism, this festive tale will ignite the holiday
spirit and illuminate the coming season with an
electrifying, rockin’ performance that cannot
be matched.”
Striking is loosely based on the story
of the Little Match girl as retold in the
time of SAD (Seasonal Effective Disorder). The show
is blessed with an attractive talented cast. It
also has a cute concept, but that is not quite enough
to sustain an entire show. As so many juke box musicals
have found, it is difficult to weave a story around
the music you already want to sing. I will add one
caveat; the two people who were seated in front
of me absolutely loved the show and as were were
leaving, they kept raving about how innovative it
was. So as always: beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Striking 12 runs November 6th – December
31st. at the Daryl Roth Theater (101 E. 15th St.),
Monday, November 6 through Sunday, December 31,
2006. Tickets for Striking 12 are $50-$75
for all performances except Thursdays at 10 p.m.,
which are only $35. The performance schedule varies.
Tickets are available via www.telecharge.com
at 212-239-6200 beginning Thursday, October 12,
or in-person at the Daryl Roth Theatre Box Office
