Twice a year, purveyors of fantasy and fancy descend on the Tents at Bryant Park to show off their inspirations to the taste-makers and power-purchasers of New York City. People clamor to get in to the runway shows any which way they can, just to catch a glimpse of imagination made real, walking down the runway, if only for a few (oft-delayed) minutes. But those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the show-behind-the-show know that Fashion Week is all about backstage. Leggy gamines running late through the park, exhausted from a non-stop schedule of shows, power naps, dinners and dancing, dashing into the makeup chair, to be poked and prodded, hair pulled drum-tight or fried into gravity-defying frizzes. Coffee, fruit salad, danishes and yogurt at the early shows. In the afternoon, flutes of champagne, bottles of beer, and everywhere water, water, water. Designers, make-up gurus, friends and hanger-ons fielding interview questions offered up in every accented version of English imaginable. An army of photographers and video crews contorting themselves in all sorts of ridiculous positions, just to catch a quick smile from Heather or Lily or Jana or Daria or Gemma or…Cell phones, Blackberries, Treos, iPods, cigarettes, tabloids, and even the occasional book – a whole arsenal of mass distraction on hand for those waiting to get into their dresses, waiting for the celebrities to take their seats, waiting for the show to begin…
