Haven’t heard of Slovenia-born designer Maja Ferme? On October 17 th, the young, strawberry-blond with model-worthy features and a sweet smile introduced herself to the NYC fashion world with her Midtown Loft fashion show. The local water nymph folk lore of Ferme’s native Slovenia and the profound natural beauty of her country’s rivers and streams inspired Ferme’s Spring/Summer ’07 Collection, “Nymph.”
Maja (pronounced “Ma-ya”) showed a variety of well-sculpted dresses in luxurious silks with an evocative, brightly colored print gracing portions of almost every piece. The original textile designs in silk charmeuse were exquisite, though the solid chiffons with rhinestones were unsubtle and a touch chintzy. Column dresses were her most successful, though some were more suitable for “Dancing with the Stars” than the New York socialites they were intended for.
Overall, the space was open and intimate, with couches for VIP’s and only two rows of seating, so that every guest had an up-close view. Everyone there was gracious and helpful, making sure that every guest felt welcome. Speaking after the show with Ferme herself and her assistant, Igor Kaps, I could see their passion for thoughtful construction and fine fabrics, and their love for their native country was evident. I look forward to seeing what Maja Ferme’s next collection brings- her dresses would definitely add color to the life of any distinctive New York woman.
