The Tents at Bryant Park

Anyone who has ever seen a collection
at the Tents has experienced the electric sense
of anticipation that occurs when the music softens,
the lights lower and the acrylic sheet is lifted
to reveal a pristine white runway before a show.
There was good reason for excitement on Wednesday
morning when Peter Som showed his fun, buoyant and
definitely girly take on spring. Som’s sassy
spring presentation drew many famous front row faces,
including fellow designers (John Bartlett), socialites
(Tinsley Mortimer) and starlets (James King).
The majority of the collection
featured unusually heavy taffetas, jacquards and
linens in daffodil yellow, buttermilk and a montage
of greys, accented with burgundy and cerulean. Botanical
prints in burgundy and ochre were reminiscent of
vintage upholstery fabrics and seemed out of place
with the reinterpreted trapeze silhouettes that
dominated Som’s runway. For a finale, he sent
out a set of empire-waisted column dresses in every
shade of cerulean chiffon, accented with contrasting
velvet sashes.
The overall themes were big buttons,
big poufs and big patent pumps in a show with the
bounciest music on the runway and the ideal dresses
to bring to your next social soiree.
