There was a noticeable Australian invasion for Fall
2007, but Ray Costarella emerged with a collection
that crossed regional boundaries and launched him
onto fashion's international stage. Entitled "Chiaroscuro-
where light meets dark," Costarella described
the presentation as "a reflection of our inner
self...our fears, hopes and light radiating around
us."
Like the well-known Aussie duo Sass & Bide,
Costarella chose an imaginative theme that was not
driven by trends that suffocated many designers
this season. Historical costume references, classical
dance fabrics and subtle futuristic details intertwined
for a frothy, yet substantial group of day and eveningwear.
The color palette of white, taupe, pale pink and
black was romantic and reliably beautiful, especially
when combined with heavy beading and embroidery.
Aurelio Costarella has radiated from North Perth
to NYC Fashion Week by its very nature- the industry
needs more couture-inspired, self-driven brands
that are seasonless and ever-evolving. No matter
where Costarella is based, this is a brand to watch.
