Clearly First is a Madison Avenue store with a hip downtown edge. Filled with art pieces, antique Scandinavian glass and furniture, Swedish haute couture and contemporary international cutting-edge design, Clearly First is a store full of surprises. And this magic is the vision of the store’s founder and creative director, Hélène Hellsten.
Recently the store invited guests to celebrate the launch of a new book, “Chic in Paris,” by Susan Tabak, a shiny red faux crocodile covered guidebook that will leave fashionistas salivating. The champagne was flowing, the crowd was buzzing and Paris was on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Guest of honor Susan Tabak was dressed in a classic black dress and a pair of black heels that “Sex in the City’s” Carrie would have died for.
Susan Tabak has created a marvelous niche for herself. Since 2001, Tabak has combined her passion for style and fashion to become a Paris Personal Shopper with rates starting at $1,500 per day. Tabak works with her clients on a one-on-one basis to assist them in creating their own unique style. She does customized research for each client, planning their shopping itinerary in Paris or New York. Tabak’s years of research and shopping is demonstrated in her book, ”Chic in Paris,” making it the perfect read for people who adore Parisian fashion.
Tabak interviewed eight influential Parisian women for their insights on beauty, personal style, and lifestyle. Each of the women interviewed told secrets about the fashion scene and gave tips on how to discover individual style. Some of the women featured in the book include: Loulou de la Falaise (Yves Saint Laurent’s muse); Ines de la Fressange (formerly the muse of Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel); and Nathalie Rykiel (boutique owner and daughter of Sonia).

The book has few words, but lots of luscious full-color photos. It would make a great addition to a library of coffee table books. “Chic in Paris” is now available in small boutique stores around the city, but do make your way to Clearly First on Madison Avenue. Their friendly, colorful staff is reason alone to make a special trip. And while you are there, check out “Chic in Paris.”
