Going to the gym may become my new
holiday tradition. As a regular member of David
Barton’s 23rd Street location, I was thrilled
to witness its transformation from sweat-drenched,
iron-pumping palace to a carnival-like club atmosphere.
Patrick McDonald (R) and
a Toy
Previously an annual winter event,
the Toy Drive is back. In December, the iconic gym
guru David Barton brought together famous designers,
musicians and socialites with the goal of getting
7,000 toys for children with HIV/AIDS. Admission
to the packed party was an unwrapped toy at the
door, and there was also a Smart Inc. benefit auction
of photos, art, designer clothing and accessories
to raise money for the cause. Along with the usual
celebutantes and pretty young things that grace
all of NYC’s holiday bashes, there were some
seriously well-established stars.

Debbie Harry is Interviewed
Music icon and Blondie frontwoman
Debbie Harry arrived early, and after the photo
ops, I had the pleasure of speaking with fashion
designer Narciso Rodriguez and burlesque beauty
Dita Von Teese. As we talked about the children
benefitting from the night’s festivities,
Narciso told me that he was playing Santa with a
bagful of Batman action figures, Barbie dolls and
other traditional fare, while Dita preferred to
give LAMB compact cases and makeup from her latest
campaign for MAC. Catching up with New York’s
ultimate man-about-town, Patrick McDonald, I learned
that his secret to a non-stop social life is refraining
from booze at parties. But with Brooklyn Brewery
beer, vodka, sake and champagne offered at the open
bar, I have a feeling that Patrick was the only
guest showing such restraint.

Thanks to leading social lady Susanne Bartsch, the guest list also included Patricia Field, Richie Rich, Amanda Lepore, Patrick McMullen, and a surprise appearance by Kelis. Overall, the event was a fun mixer for a good cause, so expect for the transformation of David Barton’s Chelsea location to be a regular holiday treat.
