The School
of American Ballet held its annual Winter Ball
on March 5, 2007 at New
York's gorgeous Lincoln Center and New York photographer
Katherin Wermke was
on hand to record the festivities. It was definitely
a night for glitter and glitz,
starting with the presence of the Chairmen (Somers
Farkas, Joanne de Guardiola,
Coco Koppelman, Liz Peek and Cindy Sites), the
Artistic Chairmen (Kyra Nichols,
Jock Soto and Ethan Stiefel) and the Young Patron
Chairmen ( Chelsea Clinton,
Jill Kargman and Alexis Tobin). (See our coverage
of the Young Patron Chairmen's
Pre-Ball Party at Tuleh)
Here is a quote from their
press release: " When George Balanchine and
Lincoln
Kirstein began the New York City Ballet they first
founded The School of American
Ballet (SAB); they knew that for great dancing
to flourish in the Untied States
there needed to be serious training. Now it has
become the nation’s preeminent
school, its graduates starring around the world.
Over 90% of the New York City
Ballet dancers are SAB trained. Alumni include
Suzanne Farrell, Edward Villella,
Ethan Stiefel and too many more to name. One of
the charms of the annual
SAB gala is the chance to see a brief school performance
that will undoubtedly
feature some of the great dancers of tomorrow."
The evening
started with a cocktail
party and then the students of the School
of American Ballet performed a "Piece D'Occasion"
choreographed by Melissa
Barak. After the students finished their performance,
they poured onto the
dance floor to dance with the chairmen and patrons
of the ballet. It was
enchanting.
