The Thuy presentation
may have been held away from the fashion frenzy
of Bryant Park, but it was big on style, class,
and sophistication. Thuy Diep is a Vietnamese American
designer who learned from fashion heavy weights
Zac Posen and Peter Som. She is already attracting
a following; famed designer Carlos Campos was on
hand to support her spring 2008 collection.
The presentation took place at
450 Studios on September 6th and the space reflected
the serenity within the collection. In lieu of long
lines and a show dripping with pretension, the Thuy
experience was refreshingly relaxed. Gleaming white
walls, giant picture windows, and delicious cocktails
set the stage for clean lines and resort-ready wear.
The models even abandoned their customary break-neck
strut and favored a casual gait. Thuy girls floated
about and were more than happy to stop and pose
for photos. Gasp - an easily photographed model
during Fashion Week!
The garments felt fresh and smooth,
with a real ease in the clothing. The slim cuts,
tailored shorts, and breezy dresses were chic. Thuy
showed perfect fits while exercising restraint.
She undoubtedly learned this technique from her
fashion-forward mentors. Overall, the collection
exhibited serious maturity while maintaining a youthful
vibe.
