Designer Thuy Diep has been showing collections for several seasons, but this year marked her inaugural runway show at the Tents of Bryant Park. Her Spring 2009 collection did not disappoint, and the clothing reflected her Vietnamese background with well crafted garments that emphasized daring cuts and structured silhouettes. We caught up with the designer backstage, and she said, “The show is based on a character from The Painted Veil. The collection is full of jade green and tiger lily red, and texturally, I blended sheer fabrics with tougher material. I wanted to show subversity in my line.”

Overall, the pieces were delicate, but there a confidence within the line. Exposed stitching and a particularly cheerful color palette worked with lightweight silks to create dramatic statements on the catwalk. The looks were created for a female who wants to achieve a rocker-meets-Barbarella sensibility. The clothing showed intentionally rough texture that bounced with effortless optimism. This young, relatable clothing is designed for the woman who wants looks to look chic while maintaining a downtown edge.
