Designer Kai Milla's
website asks
the viewer to "Live Passionately, Dress Divinely,"
a mission statement Ms. Milla has certainly fulfilled
in her own life (Ms. Milla is married to Stevie
Wonder who supplies the music for both her website
and her life).
For Spring of 2010,
Ms. Milla presented her line at the ultra modern
Museum of Art and Design, a fitting setting for
the line's aesthetic. The presentation was staged
with groups of models entering the room and posing
next to the mannequins, creating living tableaus
of the dresses that are sexy and accessible and
would flatter a variety of body sizes.
Ms. Milla's dresses
are ruched and draped interpretations of the basic
sheath. They were designed with fun elements like
cut outs and one shoulder design. The line was colored
from a neutral palette with the occasional dollop
of red and yellow. They were interpreted in pretty
silks in both solid colors and reptilian prints.
Milla has a loyal
fan base, including Michelle Obama who wore an emerald
green Milla dress for the White House ceremony when
Ms. Milla's husband, Stevie Wonder, was presented
the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular
Song.
