SIR Stage 37
508 W. 37th Street
February 13, 2010

Written and Photographed by Mark Tauriello

Project Runway winner Irena Shabayeva's Winter 2011 collection, inspired by the concepts of freedom and flight, was filled with feathers, fur, beading, and warm luxury fabrics such as leather, wool and cashmere. Couture dresses to ponchos and winter coats all incorporated feathers, whether they are actual feathers or hand painted. The collection offered a variety of both conceptual pieces such as the feather couture gowns and over sized fur wraps, to the practical pieces such as separates and winter accessories. Most innovative was the Tupperware made wings that were paired with the white strapless cocktail dress, handmade with duck feathers. By using Tupperware products, Irena Shabayeva creates an unusual relationship between garment construction, the natural elements, and industrialization. The collection was consistently impressive piece after piece, most impressive was that the entire collection was created in less than one month. Looks like the success of Project Runway is keeping Irena busy!
