The El Museo del
Barrio Gala is one of the most anticipated social
events of the New York spring season; guests fly
in from all over the world to attend. At the Gala
on May 27, 2010, out-of-town guests included Miami
Symphony Orchestra Conductor Eduardo Marturet
and his lovely wife Athina. Plácido Domingo,
who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement
Award, commuted to the party either from his home
in Teaneck, New Jersey or from his gigs as conductor
of both the Washington and the Los Angeles symphony
orchestras.
The highlight of
the evening was when Oscar de la Renta (a man
who embodies the concept of lifetime achievements)
presented the Lifetime Achievement to another
cultural icon, Placido Domingo. Barbara Walters
had originally been scheduled to present the awards,
but was sidelined by unexpected heart surgery.
Artist and President of the El Museo del Barrio
board Tony Bechera was presented with the El Museo
Special Leadership Award.
Co-chair for the evening were Yaz and Valentin
Hernadez and Renee and Alvaro Domingo (Alvaro
is the son of Placido Domingo and his wife Marta
Ornelas). The evening’s committee includes
Mr and Mrs. Ruben Blades, Ronaldo and Carolina
Herrera, Narciso Rodriguez, Francisco Costa, Agnes
Gund, Marilyn Horne, Laura and Richard Parsons,
Carmen Ana Casal de Unanue, and Ruben and Isabel
Toledo.
Noted guests included:
Belem Hudson in a beautiful black and white Christian
Cota design; designer Michelle Harper in a most
amazing hat; Oscar de la Renta's son Moises de
la Renta, a designer for Mango; Alexandra Liebenthal
in an amazing white beaded dress with a feather
train; iconic New York Times photographer Bill
Cunningham; Dimity and Horacio Milberg; fashion
designers Christian Cota, Narcisco Rodriguez and
Carlos Campos; writer/producer Crystal McCrary
Anthony; and and hat designer Lisa Boone.
