Luckily, it was a perfect night for some outdoor music. River Rocks was the accomodating host, and Pier 54 the venue. I was off on another adventure, to see bands I knew next to nothing about, and hoping for a little summertime surprise.

First up was Austria, who happens to be from Canada, probably spent many years listening to every nuance of Siouxie Sioux. Harmonic, electro poppy and psychedelic, it's reminiscent to the point it runs the risk of becoming derivative.

tUnE-yArDs is the project of Merrill Garbus, currently supporting her sophomore effort, whokill. Garbus is a mastermind of the loopstation. Usually starting with a drum loop created on the fly, she then layers on harmonies with herself. Looping in a ukelele played like a punk rocker, and supported by a bass player with a seriously subsonic tone, and saxophonists/multi- instrumentalists, the result is an exhuberant display of fearless creativity. Detecting everything from no-wave to hip hop to folk to a freaking yodel, the sound is all its own, and the genre undefineable.

The Crowd

Another night of free quality performances, courtesy of River Rocks. They make summertime in this City bearable. Until next time. See you there.
