SECTION QUARTET
Plays the Music of Radiohead
The Section Quartet challenges
ideas about the role of strings in rock, pop
and alternative music, and fundamental notions
about what a rock band can be. TSQ doesn't
play classical music -- they only play rock
& roll: by turns one of the most in-demand
crews for both recording studio collaborations
and electrifying live performances alongside
music's top artists and producers, and a bona
fide rock band in their own right. This Los
Angeles based rock-band-disguised-as-a-string-quartet

King Wilkie
Even as they were named
2004's Emerging Artist of the Year by the
International Bluegrass Music Association,
the sound of King Wilkie was extending outward
in directions that could no longer be comfortably
contained under the bluegrass banner. The
band spent the next two years touring non-stop,
building a die-hard following and honing an
idiosyncratic new sound. The result is the
evocative, harrowing Low Country Suite - a
dramatic push into uncharted sonic terrain.
Produced by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks,
Wilco), Low Country Suite draws on the pioneering
spirit of Sweetheart of the Rodeo-era Byrds,
Gram Parsons' solo LPs, and "Country
Honk" Stones, while the album's gentler
songs are equally informed by the stark, confessional
folk of Nico, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen.
Haunting yet strangely uplifting, Low Country
Suite is the captivating sound of a band willing
to leave precedent behind to create intoxicating
new music from the jagged remains of yesterday.

Eilen Jewell/The Sacred
Shakers
Once in a great while, you
put on a CD by an artist you’ve never
heard of before and time stops. The voice
is new, yet timeless. The lyrics are original
yet feel immediately familiar, lived-in, knowing.
The melodies [expertly performed by a first-rate
band carry an easy, memorable groove. This
is the story of Eilen Jewell. It started after
her 2005 self-released debut, Boundary Country,
made its way into club-owners hands, onto
a handful of radio shows and around the press
circles of Boston, her current home base.
Reaction to her music was swift. Many compared
her talents to those of Lucinda Williams,
Gillian Welch and June Carter Cash. The Boston
Globe said, he slow organic sway of her melodies,
and the sensual way she rubs against the low
end of her register, will remind some of Gillian
Welch. Also like Welch, her writing is both
intimate and vivid, classically framed and
closely observed. In an era dominated by artfully
inscrutable songwriters, her songs come on
like nakedness and thunder "and her keenly
visual way of articulating deep emotion is
palpable. the Sacred Shakers will open for
Eileen Jewell.

Scrapomatic: Alligator Love
Cry CD Release
Emboldened with fresh takes on both urban
and country blues, and sparked by spirited,
provocative original material, Scrapomatic
arrives with a convincing array of raw, outspoken
and emotional tracks. Alligator Love Cry,
the band’s second CD release, and Landslide
Records debut, lays down a solid foundation
of potent blues, overlaid with a stunning
mixture of highly charged vocals, New Orleans
jazz derivations, sweet soul music and even
a memorable taste of 50’s scat singing.
Scrapomatic’s songs color in the spaces
between a host of styles that can rock you
down to sleep or stand up out of that wicker
chair and slap you blind. Hailing from Minneapolis/St.
Paul, MN and schooled individually in jazz,
roots and blues music, Mike Mattison and Paul
Olsen began playing together in the mid-1990s.
After being recognized with Minnesota Music
Award nominations for Best R&B Group and
Best Male Vocalist, the duo decamped to Brooklyn,
NY in 1997 and have since stomped their way
through nearly every venue in the metropolitan
New York area, including Carnegie Hall. In

Balla Tounkara
Balla was born in Mali, West Africa into one
of the most prestigious griot families in
that country. Griots, the musicians, oral
historians, storytellers, and peacemakers,
date back to ancient times and although their
roles have changed the tradition lives on.
Balla began playing the kora (a 21 stringed
instrument) as a child. He received his first
kora from his grandfather, Batouroue Sekou
Kouyate, one of the most respected players
of that instrument in the world. Balla studied
the kora with his grandfathers, Batouroue
and Samakou Tounkara, He learned to respect
the music and maintain the cultures history
as well as his family history. His deep devotion
to Manding music and his rich education has
lead Balla to become a master kora player
and vocalist. Balla became interested in the
possibilities of the kora beyond traditional
Mande music. He left Mali in 1996 and settled
in United States to develop and enrich his
music, playing with accomplished Western musicians
in the styles he was most interested in. .He
soon began to fuse traditional Mande music
with all styles of music from jazz to funk
to rock to hip hop and R & B to Latin
to reggae. Balla eventually formed his own
group, Groupe Spirit. Although the members
have changed throughout the years, the mission
has remained the same, fusing traditional
Mande music with Western music creating high
energy, intelligent music. They perform a
spicy, eclectic blend of African, Latin, Funk,
and blues that can electrify any audience.

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson
24 year-old Miles Benjamin
Anthony Robinson is Brooklyn’s best-kept
secret. Since recording an album with Grizzly
Bear’s Chris Taylor and Chris Bear in
2006 (with appearances by Kyp Malone of TV
on the Radio and Grizzly Bear’s Daniel
Rossen), Miles has garnered a following at
his transcendent live performances. With the
addition and solidification of his backing
band, the Black Boys, Miles’ folk rock
has taken a turn toward the anthemic stylings
of Fleetwood Mac, Bell Biv Devoe, and early
Pavement. The total effect integrates the

washboard and bass fiddle, they have successfully
created a following that has crossed over

jazz and beyond while maintaining their grassroots
credibility. Their 19thcentury string band
sound was popular in the 1920's and 1930's;

The Paper Raincoat with
special guest Bess Rogers
The Paper Raincoat is an
imaginative collaboration between Brooklyn
songwriters Amber Rubarth and Alex Wong that
brings to life a colorful world teeming with
compelling characters, dream-like storylines,
and metaphorical narratives. Their debut EP
Safe in The Sound is an introduction to this
fantasy world drawn from real experiences
of excitement and solitude its creators shared
in moving to New York City. The songs are
a cinematic blend of pop-folk orchestral arrangements,
peppered with electronic textures, and overflowing
with unforgettable melodies. "Our goal
was to create songs that were enjoyable on
any level…” adds Alex. “…Catchy
and meaningful enough for listeners to relate
to whether they knew the back-story or not.
Once they liked the music, we felt discovering
the story hidden inside the songs would only
increase their connection to them." www.myspace.com/thepaperraincoat
Bess Rogers is a compelling
performer with nothing but a guitar; she impressed
people for years with her wonderful songs
and her beautiful, silky voice. What's impressive
about her recent release Decisions Based on
Information… is its ability to straddle
genre-lines and to throw in more instruments
than you find in a high-school band without
ever veering towards the muddled or confused.
Where else would you find an accordion and
a banjolele on a record filled with endless
'ba da da's and accessible lyrics that beg
you to dig a little deeper? Bess' songs run
the gamut from strange and waltzy to alt-country
to brooding folk to twee pop, sometimes in
the space of a single song. The only constant
is Bess' obvious gift for melody, her luxurious,
sultry, or sweet voice (depending on the moment),

American Babies with Jason
Rossi
When Hamilton strums his
acoustic guitar, casually wails into his harmonica,
and leads the American Babies in another one
of their wistful numbers, he channels a young
Gram Parsons (or perhaps a more sober Ryan
Adams). And when the American Babies wrap
their three-part harmonies around Hamilton's
twangy baritone, it's not hard to see this
group - and their young leader - enjoying
a career as lengthy as those aforementioned
luminaries. - BaebleMedia.com
Jason Rossi is a New York
based singer-songwriter, whose acoustic style
has been influenced by a diverse group --
Bob Dylan, John Prine, Bruce Springsteen and
the late, great Townes van Zandt to name a
few. Jason's solo acoustic career began in
small venues in New York and Los Angeles,
where his song "Mr. Sunshine" was
selected for an episode of Dane Cook's HBO
series, "Tourgasm". It was also
in Los Angeles that Jason spent one memorable
Sunday afternoon travelling with, and musing
over Ramblin' Jack Elliot's Martin D-28. Jason's
music weaves introspective stories of his
life and travels from New York to L.A. and
back again. His band, Hey Battlefield, includes
an outstanding group of New York based musicians.
Together, they take the music to a level that

Dryland is the highly-anticipated follow-up
to Pureka’s 2004 debut, Driving North,
for which the rising newcomer has landed praise

Springsteen or a troubled Ryan Adams. Others
see Nashville shining on the horizon for this
indie-acoustic songstress whose simple, yet
heartfelt and vulnerable delivery often resembles
shades of female greats like Patty Griffin,
Gillian Welch or Mary Gauthier. Whatever the
reference point, one thing remains certain:
on her newest release, Chris Pureka has taken

POLITICAL SUBVERSITIES:
Inconvenient Conventions
Directed by Elizabeth Swados
If you're not involved in politics, you should
be. And one great way of finding out about
what's going on is the show Political Subversities
which takes everything that's in our news
and culture and makes it into a raucous, feisty,
irreverent, half-insane buffet of song, spoken
word and yes, even dance. The group has been
together for over a year now and the ensemble
work is as smooth and daring as acrobats playing
with rings of fire. Or something like that.
The group writes, composes and performs its

Terence Howard Shine It
Through CD Release
Raised in Cleveland with
many summers spent in New York City, Terrence
Howard, an aspiring songwriter and musician
since early adolescence, landed his first
film and television acting roles in the late
1980s before his breakthrough performance
