Film | SOUL KITCHEN

Catch a sneak preview of this film with director Fatih Akin in person for a post-screening Q&A moderated by journalist and filmmaker Bilge Ebiri. Young restaurant owner Zinos is down on his luck. His girlfriend Nadine has moved to Shanghai, his Soul Kitchen customers are boycotting the new gourmet chef, and he‘s having back trouble on top of it all. Things start looking up when the hip crowd embraces his revamped culinary concept, but that doesn‘t mend Zinos’ broken heart. He decides to fly to China for Nadine, leaving the restaurant in the hands of his unreliable excon brother Illias. Both decisions turn out disastrous: Illias gambles away the restaurant to a shady real estate agent and Nadine has found a new lover! But brothers Zinos and Illias might still have one last chance to get Soul Kitchen back if they can stop arguing and work together as a team. Director: Fatih Akin. 99 min. 2010. 35mm.

Music | JADE MCNELIS

While many artists may wait years or decades to be discovered, Jade McNelis started her music career in the fast lane, opening for Canadian pop band Stars at the age nineteen. She quickly signed to the Montreal-based label, Good Fences, and recorded her debut EP, All the Fables, at the tender but tough age of twenty. The record showcases McNelis' stirring voice as it traverses cabaret, raucous rock, and classical styles. Sophisticated and raw, edgy yet innocent, these brief, eclectic songs are both accessible and profound in their pop and orchestral range. Now based in New York, McNelis brings her exceptional songwriting talent to 92YTribeca’s café stage for an intimate performance. And don’t be surprised if the music sounds hauntingly familiar... McNelis’ track “Wings” was recently featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Music | TRACY BONHAM / BLEU / COMMON ROTATION

Tracy Bonham's 1996 major label debut The Burdens of Being Upright went gold, spawning the hit single “Mother Mother” and leading to a pair of Grammy nominations for Best Female Vocalist and Best Alternative Rock Performance. Tonight she performs songs from her first full length album in five years, Masts of Manhattan, which features ace guitarist Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Beck, Norah Jones) and his band Smokey's Roundup, and has a raw energy with a melodic and harmonic richness that surpasses anything she's ever done before. Playing with her is Bleu, a prolific songwriter and powerpop bandleader who has toured with John Mayer, Switchfoot, and Ryan Adams. His latest album A Watched Pot was originally recorded in 2005 for Aware/Columbia Records as a follow up to his critically-acclaimed 2003 record Redhead, which NPR listed as one of the Top 10 records of the year. Plus, Common Rotation starts off the night with a set of melodic folk.

Film | FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL PRESENTS: JOYSTICKS

Found Footage Festival creators Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett present a screening of this lost 1980s teen comedy that clearly aimed to ride on the Meatballs/Porky’s wave, complete with awkward sexual encounters and other goofy antics. When Joseph Rutter (Joe Don Baker) tries to shut down the local video arcade, the patrons fight back. He enlists the help of his idiot nephews and eventually finds an unlikely accomplice in King Vidiot, who appears to be the Billy Idol of video games. The arcade’s owner puts his best player McDorfus on the job, staking it all on a competition for the highest score. Throw in a horrifically catchy soundtrack, some scantily clad women and an inexplicably randy housewife, and you won’t doubt that this is a product of the 80s. Hosts Nick and Joe will tell you how they stumbled onto a VHS copy of Joysticks and will give it the usual Found Footage Festival treatment. Special thanks to Camelot Distribution Group for permission for this screening. Director: Greydon Clark. 88 min. 1983.
