ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER
OPENING NIGHT GALA BENEFIT
NOVEMBER 30th
New York City Center

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will kick-off a five-week New York season on November 30th with a star-studded gala benefit at New York City Center that begins an exciting new era led by Artistic Director Robert Battle. Honorary Chairs for the special evening are First Lady Michelle Obama and the legendary model Iman.

Nine-time Grammy Award-winner John Legend will join Ailey’s Alicia Graf Mack in an exclusive live performance of “If It’s Magic,” choreographed by Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison to the timeless music of Stevie Wonder.

Attendees will also enjoy the company premiere of modern dance master Paul Taylor’s Arden Court, a one-night-only performance of Lar Lubovitch’s duet Prelude to a Kiss, and Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece Revelations, with live music and a cast of 50. “Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is not only one of the world’s most popular dance companies, but a cultural treasure that renews your spirit with each performance,” said Iman, one of the evening’s Honorary Chairs. “I can’t wait to see the curtain go up on Ailey’s extraordinary dancers and share in a moment of true revelry.”

The benefit will honor Kimberly B. Davis, President of The JPMorgan Chase Foundation, for all of J.P. Morgan’s wonderful support of Ailey’s educational and community programs over the years. The event’s co-chairs are Simin & Herb Allison, Kathryn & Kenneth Chenault, Agnes & Gerald Hassell, Linda & Sandy Lindenbaum, Sharon C. Taylor and Joan & Sandy Weill.

Proceeds from the Gala will benefit Ailey’s educational programs, including scholarships and innovative outreach programs. SHE KILLS MONSTERS
Tuesday - Saturday at 7pm
Saturday & Sunday at 3pm
November 4 – December 23
The Flea Theater

The Bats are back and ready for action in The Flea Theater’s world premiere production of SHE KILLS MONSTERS, a comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, written by Qui Nguyen and directed by Robert Ross Parker. Previews begin November 4, with opening night slated for Thursday, November 17.

In SHE KILLS MONSTERS, average Agnes is finally leaving her childhood home following the death of her totally weird sister, Tilly. When she stumbles upon Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, Agnes embarks on an action-packed adventure to discover more about her sister than she previously cared to know. A high-octane comedy fraught with hostile fairies, randy ogres, and ‘90s pop culture, SHE KILLS MONSTERS is a heart-pounding homage to the badass (& geek) within us all.

The Flea will also host the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired art exhibit DOOMSLANGERS. Successfully presented at New York’s Allegra LaViola Gallery last winter, Artist Casey Jex Smith brings to life a D&D adventure to save the mythical city of Dingershare from the evil Lord Ricaek. The exhibit can be viewed in the Flea’s lobby one-hour before the show.

Tickets are $25 and are available by calling 212-352-3101 or online at www.theflea.org. Please also note, all Tuesday performances are Pay-What-You-Can (one ticket per person; subject to availability at the door only) and Saturday matinees are $10.

Pillage The Village: World's Largest Scavenger Hunt
Saturday, November 19th at 12:00 Noon
Greenwich Village

DealEvents.com and the Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce Attempt To Break World Record To Benefit Four Charities

There are many things that New York City does better than Chicago. In the vital departments of pizza, baseball, the weather and bagels, The Big Apple leaves The Windy City in its dust. On Saturday, November 19th, DealEvents.com, New York's favorite new daily deal website, and the Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce will attempt to add one more item to this list: scavenger hunts. DealEvents and the Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to organize Pillage The Village: World's Largest Scavenger Hunt, a prize-filled marathon event to promote their Shop Local Initiative, all while benefiting four non-profit organizations.

The University of Chicago set the current Guinness World Records™ record with a scavenger hunt that drew 924 participants earlier this year. Pillage The Village organizers expect New Yorkers to shatter that record by coming out to support downtown businesses.

Throughout Pillage The Village, hunters must gather items and complete tasks at locations all around Greenwich Village. Winners will take home prizes including Kindle Fires, travel vouchers, restaurant gift certificates, movie passes and more. The event is open to all ages and participation is free. Pillage The Village will kickoff at a soon to be disclosed location in downtown New York at 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 19th. Participants can register now at http://dealevents.eventbrite.com/. To keep up with Pillage The Village news, please visit: http://www.facebook.com/dealevents, http://twitter.com/#!/dealevents http://www.dealevents.com.

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College continues its 2011-2012 World Stages series with Compañía Flamenca José Porcel. Under the artistic direction of internationally renowned flamenco artist José Porcel, Spain's preeminent company of dancers, musicians and singers will perform a program entitled "Gypsy Fire" on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 2:00 pm. "Gypsy Fire" celebrates the origins of the art of flamenco. "With this new production," says Mr. Porcel, "I would like to present to audiences the purest and oldest parts of flamenco, preserving the traditional customs and experiences of the Andalusian people." The Company returns to the United States for the first time since their critically acclaimed 2008-2009 North American tour. Including both intricately choreographed and improvisational works, the repertoire will range from the deeply emotional "Seguiriya," which portrays the suffering and pain of the Gypsy people, to the more elegant "Ronda," a piece performed by women incorporating the traditional long-trained dresses and castanets, and the festive "Alegrías," inspired by the playfulness of traditional Spanish jesters and clowns.

Lady Bunny in That Ain't No Lady!
Every Tuesday from now until November 29th at 8PM.
La Nueva Escuelita

The raunchy, demented drag diva of Wigstock fame presents her first full-length one wo-man show in almost a decade at the popular latin nightspot La Escuelita every Tuesday in October at 8PM. Fast-paced and action-packed with glitzy costumes and Bunny's trademark gravity-defying bouffant wig, That Ain't No Lady! is a cabaret designed for a night club crowd--no lengthy monologues or sappy show tunes here. For mature audiences who enjoy irreverent humor! Though she just finished her second season of Rupaul's Drag U on Logo as the Dean Of Drag giving contestants "Lady Lessons", Bunny's deliciously bawdy brand humor is far from ladylike. Bunny re-works pop songs into hysterical parodies, using recent smashes like Ke$ha's Tik Tok (which Bunny transforms into Big Cock) to classics like All That Jizz. No musical genre is sacred so expect to hear from everyone from Katy Perry to Taio Cruz to Britney and Whitney get butchered. Sprinkle in zany Laugh-In style joke routines and a tribute to Amy Winehouse for added politically incorrect fun.

With a ticket price of $14.98 that's as cheap as her humor and a recession-friendly 1 drink minimum, That Ain't No Lady! provides over an hour of laughs for a decidedly affordable price. However, since Bunny's singing has been known to drive audiences to drink, there is a strictly-enforced 25 drink maximum. More info/tickets: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/198296

Opening Reception: Tuesday, September 27th 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Times Square Gallery of Hunter College

"Industrial Aesthetics: Environmental Influences on Recent Art from Scotland" is curated by Darren Jones (Hunter College MFA ’09). With Glasgow at its heart, Scotland has, over the past twenty-five years, developed into one of the world’s most influential and imaginative centers of artistic production. New generations of artists continue to emerge from this unique city’s cultural rebirth, and the country’s transformation into a vital creative nexus. This exhibition brings together the work of an extraordinary group of artists from Scotland and contextualizes their various aesthetic and conceptual concerns within the wider social and civic legacies of their environment.

One of the largest exhibitions of contemporary art from Scotland ever seen in the United States, "Industrial Aesthetics: Environmental Influences on Recent Art from Scotland" presents a collection of works forged from a unique set of circumstances.

The participating artists are the originators and caretakers of a dynamic and inventive art scene that echoes ideals of social organization and communal action—hallmarks of Glasgow’s political and commercial history.

September 19 - October 24

EndTimes Productions will present the World Premiere of SMART, a true-crime drama based on the notorious Dartmouth Murders of 2001. Written by Robert Fieldsteel and directed by Russell Dobular, SMART was originally presented as part of VIGNETTES FOR THE APOCALYPSE, New York's oldest and largest Sci-fi/Horror-themed theater festival, in June. This revised, re-worked production will run September 19 - October 24 at The Kraine Theater.

SMART centers around Doug, a college student who is writing his dissertation on a pair of high school classmates who brutally murder a college professor and his wife. Posing as students doing research for a school survey, the teens hatch a plan to take the couple by surprise, threaten them into revealing their bank PIN numbers, rob and kill them -- all to get money for a trip to Australia. The chilling scenes play out as Doug interviews one of the murderers from jail, delving deep into the mind of a cold-blooded killer.

SMART stars Alessandro Colla, Kiersten Armstrong, Kelly Riley, Matthew Glogowski, Anthony Mead and Becky Sterling with costumes by Christopher Johnston, special effects by Leah Dashe and sound design by Stefan Bensaid.

Accion's Mission

ACCION International is a private, nonprofit organization with the mission of giving people the financial tools they need to work their way out of poverty. By providing “micro” loans, business training and other financial services to poor men and women who start their own businesses, ACCION helps people work their way up the economic ladder, with dignity and pride.

Accion's Vision and Objective

ACCION pursues a vision in which all people have access to a range of high-quality financial services that enhance their economic potential and the quality of their lives.

We are more committed than ever to using our 50 years of experience in order to help build a more financially inclusive world. To this end, we will continue to focus sharply on the reduction of vulnerability and on increasing opportunity for poor households by helping to deliver full financial inclusion – credit, savings, insurance, payments, remittances, financial education and more – provided at affordable prices, in a convenient manner and with dignity for clients.

Over the last few decades, microfinance has grown in scale by orders of magnitude – from reaching tens of thousands, to now reaching 150 million of the world's poor. This spectacular growth was unleashed when nonprofit organizations began evolving into regulated, sustainable microfinance banks, fueled by access to the capital markets. This evolution has been a natural outgrowth of the mission of microfinance.

Yet much more can be done to meet the full needs of those currently being served by microfinance, and there are a further 2 billion people who remain excluded from the system altogether. ACCION believes that in today’s world, financial inclusion must be an imperative.

CONSENT
A staged reading of a new play that confronts bullying and homophobia
Tuesday, October 11th (National Coming Out Day) at 7PM
National Comedy Theatre

All donations and a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Trevor Project

Featuring: Liza Harris, Eric LaPointe, Benedict Mazurek, John Edgar Moser & Chelsie Shipley. Stage Directions: Brady Blevins.

“CONSENT” examines the many types of bullying gay youth face, both obvious and subtle. The work focuses on Seth, a troubled sixteen-year-old, trying to come to terms with his sexuality in the face of ridicule and prejudice. In addition, the play very honestly depicts Seth’s sexual awakening as he crushes on his bully’s younger brother and discovers that his feelings may be reciprocated. Seth is also involved in a questionable relationship with his baseball coach and must also deal with the return of his estranged mother. He soon finds his life spinning out of control and contemplates suicide.

“CONSENT” focuses on the responsibilities we all have to communicate with our youth and teach our children to celebrate their differences instead of denigrating them. The play also warns against taking advantage of the trust teens place in the adults they look up to.

Based, in part, on factual events, “CONSENT” explores the myriad of reasons gay teens feel compelled to consider suicide and provides quite the potentially controversial twist to a much too prevalent story. Impetus Ensemble hopes to continue to raise awareness about this important subject.

The play runs 2 hours, 10 minutes. There will be one intermission. Admission: $5. Suggested Donation for The Trevor Project: $5.

The Amazing Max
Sunday's in October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 @ 4:30 PM.
Manhattan Movement and Arts Center

The Amazing Max and The Box of Interesting Things is a Magic Show with a mind of it's own. Objects appear out of thin air, the laws of physics are defied, and miracles are performed inches from spectators' faces. As the props onstage seem intent on surprising even the magician himself, this out of control show bursts with striking visual magic, comedy and juggling, and loads of audience participation. The Amazing Max and The Box of Interesting Things is the wackiest, most interactive, highest energy magic show for families on the market today. Max Darwin was born into show business. At the time of his birth, his parents were professional street performers specializing in clowning, mime, juggling, and magic. At five months of age, he was thrust onto the stage, and the street, with his parents in shows all over the United States. As he grinned in the spotlight, audiences everywhere cheered. Max's alter ego, The Amazing Max, has emerged as one of the most sought-after magicians in the children's magic world. Over the past 10 years he has performed at 3,000 events with a client roster including notable celebrities such as Uma Thurman, William Baldwin, Diana Ross, Steven A. Cohen, Chaz Palminteri, Ethan Hawke, and Tommy Hilfiger. In 2003 Max was handpicked as the original host of the hit Nickelodeon show GAME FARM.

Pricing: Magic Carpet Rides (VIP seating) $49.50, regular general admission tickets $29.50. Tickets are available at www.telecharge.com or by phone at 212-239-6200 or 800-432-7250. For more information, visit www.manhattanmovement.com or www.theamazingmax.com.

The organization has been instrumental in spurring the reform of more than a dozen failing child welfare systems nationwide, leading to dramatic improvements in the lives of tens of thousands of children and families.

To raise awareness and support for this cause, CHILDREN’S RIGHTS will hold its Sixth Annual Benefit—honoring real estate developer Douglas Durst—on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at NYC’s Plaza Hotel. Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates:
"Grandma’s Benefits Imperil Junior’s Future"
October 4th
Reception 5:45 - 6:30 PM / Debate 6:45 - 8:30
NYU's Skirball Center

On October 4, New York City’s premier live debate series, Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US), takes a look at America's entitlement programs. Given our rapidly aging population and harsh economic realities, healthcare has become an especially pressing issue. Among the questions to be addressed at the debate: Are we asking our children to sacrifice their future for the sake of the elderly? Have entitlements saddled our children with unmanageable debt? If we do cut spending to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, how will the elderly be cared for?

In Support of the motion, “Grandma’s Benefits Imperil Junior’s Future,” are Margaret Hoover, Fox News commentator, and Mort Zuckerman, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of U.S. News & World Report. Against the motion are Former DNC Chairman and Governor of Vermont Howard Dean, and leading economist Jeff Madrick.

“With a leading Republican presidential candidate declaring Social Security a Ponzi Scheme, and all of the continuing controversy over the passage of major health care reform legislation, this debate is uniquely positioned to add new insight into this highly charged issue,” says Dana Wolfe, executive producer of Intelligence Squared U.S.

Moderated by ABC News Nightline’s John Donvan, Intelligence Squared U.S.'s fall season, presented in partnership with Slate, will air on WNET and more than 220 NPR stations nationwide.

Tickets: $40 ($12 for students w/ID) To purchase, visit www.iq2us.org

SMART
Mondays at 7:30pm
September 19 - October 24
The Kraine Theater

SMART runs September 19 - October 24, Mondays at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 ($15 for students), available at 212-352-3101 or www.EndTimesProductions.org

Alfama

Fado, the soulful Portuguese musical art form, is rarely performed in New York. Alfama, the city’s foremost Portuguese restaurant, was one of the very few places that regularly hosted fado singers in their original location. This fall, Alfama, newly relocated to East 52nd Street, brings back these popular fado nights with the debut of the Fado Taverna at Alfama in a cozy space beneath the restaurant reminiscent of fado tavernas in Lisbon. For the first series of shows in September and October, Alfama will welcome up-and-coming fadista Luisa Rocha, who recently released her debut album and is widely known in Portugal for her range and eclectic taste – she moves as smoothly in lighter fado-canção as in deeper traditional fados. Rocha will perform two sets on Thursdays and Sundays from September 25 to October 13 (schedule below). Rocha will be accompanied by two accomplished guitarists, Guilherme Banza and Michael da Silva.

Cover charge is $15 per person with no minimum purchase required. Full menu will be available. Reservations required: 212-759-5552

The Draft Riots and Gangs of New York Walking Tour
Sunday, September 25 - 11:00AM
greenwood Cemetery

The Draft Riots of 1863 are one of the saddest chapters in New York City history. Many of the participants—both famous and unknown—are buried in Green-Wood. Join Green-Wood Historic Fund tour guide Ruth Edebohls to visit and hear the histories of Horace Greeley, Henry J. Raymond, Boss Tweed, the Brooks Brothers, abolitionist Abigail Hopper Gibbons and others who rest here along with little-known victims of the riots. The film "Gangs of New York" included many of them as characters and also featured the era's legendary gang leader William "Bill the Butcher" Poole. You'll also enjoy the visual delights of Green-Wood, its trees and ponds and its sculpture and buildings by the leading artists and architects of their time. Walk may be hilly and strenuous—wear good walking shoes.

Ruth Edebohls worked for the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment as its Coordinator of Urban Tours and as a tour guide for 15 years. A Brooklyn native, she is a licensed New York City Tour Guide and urban historian with a special enthusiasm for Green-Wood Cemetery. JOHN RITTER

September 9th - October 9th
Gallery Hours: Tues-Sat 11am-7pm
Lyons Wier Gallery Project Space

Lyons Wier Gallery Project Space is proud to present a series of new original artwork and limited edition prints by award-winning illustrator John Ritter.

Ritter's politically and emotionally charged works utilize the vernacular of the information age to create vibrant images of politics, celebrity, crime, and catastrophe.

By exposing the inherent anxiety of today's world, these subversive works fashion unseen relationships and contexts through humor and clever juxtaposition. Ritter's works are simultaneously complex and accessible, offering new political as well as artistic possibilities.
Ritter studies and sources potential subjects from found photographs then manufactures compositional elements by layering and combining his own original photography to make a fabricated context in which the subject matter exists. His work exists in its purest form, as a digital configuration, that has been appropriated, reconfigured and recycled into a form that is humanly expressive, provocative and consumable.

Ritter's animated and concise illustrations of celebrities and popular culture have consistently graced the pages and covers of mainstream publications such as The New Yorker, Time, GQ, The New York Times and Harpers, to name a few.

The chilling scenes play out as Doug interviews one of the murders from jail, delving deep into the mind of a cold-blooded killer.

SMART stars Alessandro Colla, Kiersten Armstrong, Kelly Riley, Matthew Glogowski, Anthony Mead and Becky Sterling with costumes by Christopher Johnston, special effects by Leah Dashe and sound design by Stefan Bensaid.

SMART runs September 19 - October 24, Mondays at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 ($15 for students), available at 212-352-3101 or www.EndTimesProductions.org

Opera Idol Competition
Sunday, September 18th, 2011 at 7:30PM
Merkin Hall, Kaufman Center 129 West, 67th Street, New York

On Sunday, September 18th, 2011, tweleve of the fiercest opera hopefuls from around the world will be competing in a live concert at Merkin Hall in New York for one of the most prestigious titles of the year: Winner of Opera Idol! First Place, determined by the judge panel, will be crowned “Opera Idol” and receive a Grand Prize of $1000 while second place will be chosen by the audience and will receive a cash prize of $500. The judges will have their hands full with this cutting-edge competition, especially since every single one of the vocalists competing for first place is a phenomenally gifted singer. Many of the competing vocalists have well-developed opera careers and have performed around the world for numerous years. Each participant will sing one aria, selected from legendary operas such as Carmen, La Boheme, Eugene Onegin, The Magic Flute, and more.
Opera Idol will be hosted by co-founder of Arkadi Foundation, Ronit Ashirov. Ashirov and Peer are the grandchildren of Arkadi Namatiev who was a Baritone opera singer. |

Arkadi was born in Soviet Union in 1914 and died in 1989 in Israel. He was the father of five children. He performed in the opera house of Tajikistan in a variety of operas including Aida, Figaro, La Boheme, and many more. In 1973 Arkadi immigrated to Tel Aviv, Israel and became one of the most well-known cantors in the country. The inheritance of his talent was evident when several of his children became concert pianists and especially when young Michael Peer turned to opera himself winning many prestigious awards and ultimately founding the Arkadi foundation that assists in developing young Operatic talent. The proceeds from opera Idol will be contributed to Schneider Hospital in Long Island known today as Cohen’s Children Hospital and will benefit the oncology department that assists with the fight against cancer.

On the judges panel will be Mark Oswald, world-renowned Metropolitan Opera House singer and Phil Hall, respected conductor and vocal coach. Guests will also be enjoy the company of special honorary judge Ziva Namatiev, daughter of Arkadi Namatiev, who will be arriving especially from Israel to serve to accompany one of Arkadi's classic songs on Piano.

Accompanying the competing vocalists on stage will be the extraordinary pianist and Metropolitan Opera House coach, Yelena Kurdina. During the second part of the concert, Michael Peer, Bass-Baritone, concert soloist and opera singer will sing in a cross-over musical style. In addition, Peer will premiere a special song that was recently written for him by Tomer Hadadi and will be released shortly on his first album. Peer will also present an array of additional musical numbers such as “Hallelujah” written by Leonard Cohen and many other favorites.

Today is the Tenth Anniversay of the Al Queda attacks on the United States of America. I was in New York that day and will never forget what I saw, heard and felt.

Here is a copy of my page from 9.11..NYC...The Days After, a compilation of memories by New Yorkers.

September 11th |Wendy R. Williams | www.newyorkcool.com

I was in my apartment when the phone rang; it was my daughter, telling me to turn on the TV - a plane had hit the World Trade Center. The talking heads thought there had been an accident. I was watching TV when the second plane hit. Everyone quit breathing. No one knew what to say; we were living on a different planet where there were no analogies.

Beth Israel Hospital is across the street from my apartment. I walked to the emergency room entrance and saw a group of medical workers dressed in hazmat suits standing outside. I stood with them and waited for over an hour and no one came. There were no survivors. I headed back to my apartment. I was fine, but then I would see a stranger on the street and we would both burst into tears.

Twenty- four hours later, New York had changed. There were fighter jets screaming through the sky and a carrier in the river. There were two policemen/women on every corner in the city - a total of eight per intersection. When I went to the deli at the corner for Avenue A and 14th Street (two blocks from my apartment) , there was a camouflaged colored Humvee and two gun-toting National Guardsmen at the corner. We were living in a war zone.

I worked across the street from the Empire State Building, now the tallest building in New York City. Three times during the week of September 11th, we were told to run down the stairs and run for our lives. When I was actually at the office, huge lines of siren-wailing police cars would speed down 34th Street several times a day. We never found out where they were going.

The last time we were told to evacuate, I took the Third Avenue bus downtown. The bus passed the Armory which was being used as a clearing house for the missing. The fences were covered with small posters with photos of loved ones and horrifically sad messages, "Have you seen my husband, my daughter, my brother." People were walking in a slow line to enter the armory. I looked around the bus and saw that everyone was asleep. It was 3PM and everyone was asleep; it was more than we could bear.

Inspired by the traditional all-night concerts along India’s Ganges River, SUN TO STARS is an exciting South Asian Cultural Festival that evokes the traditional durbar and bethak-style concerts where performers and audiences interact in an informal setting to create an intimate artistic experience. With a backdrop defined by both natural and urban elements, the performers present work that grapples with the environment, be it through mythological folktales or a particular raga connected to nature.

Returning to Solar One for the 6th year, the festival will be curated by choreographer Parul Shah and dancer/author Reena Shah, and will include an expanded selection of kids activities: including storytelling; learning hand gestures from Indian classical dance; learning how to wrap a sari; making and flying traditional patang kites; decorating clay pots, as is done for Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and much more! There will also be young student dancers performing alongside their teachers. Children’s activities will be held in the early part of the Festival, between 2pm and 4pm.

As the day progresses into the evening, performers will include the Parul Shah Dance Company and sitarists Neel Murgai and Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury.
SUN TO STARS is solar-powered by the energy collected by the photovoltaic panels on Solar One’s roof. The event also features a marketplace of regional South Asian cuisine from local chefs, Indian style seating with floor rugs and cushions, and information about important local South Asian and environmental organizations.
The festival is FREE and open to the public, and families with kids of all ages are welcome. Kids will love watching the dance & music performances, sitting on the colorful rugs & trying out lots of fun activities, while also learning about the environment and sustainable energy!

Demolition of the Eiffel Tower, is a tragicomedy that addresses one of the modern world's most significant problems - terrorism arising as a consequence of global political and religious conflicts. Sigourney Weaver & Tom Wopat Help Commemorate 9/11 with Special Performances of
Anne Nelson’s
THE GUYS
September 6-9
Various Lower Manhattan Venues

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, The Flea Theater (Jim Simpson, Artistic Director; Carol Ostrow, Producing Director) will present special performances of Anne Nelson’s THE GUYS at various venues in Lower Manhattan including the Museum of Jewish Heritage (for the FDNY) and Goldman Sachs.

Director Jim Simpson and acclaimed actors Sigourney Weaver and Tom Wopat reprise their work in this moving post-9/11 piece for FDNY families, the downtown community and other guests.

“The Flea could not be more honored to once again present a work that so helped and healed when it was first presented a decade ago,” notes Ostrow. “We thank the FDNY and Goldman Sachs for hosting a theatrical moment of reflection as we look back at a period that so changed us all.”

THE GUYS is a dialogue between a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the September 11th attack, and an editor who helps him write the eulogies as she struggles herself to come to terms with the event. It originally played as a workshop production with Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver, and its initial year-long run featured other notable performers including Susan Sarandon, Anthony LaPaglia, Tim Robbins, Marlo Thomas, Stephen Lang, Amy Irving, Bill Irwin, Swoosie Kurtz and Dan Lauria. A film version of THE GUYS starring Weaver and LaPaglia was also released in 2003 by Focus Features.

The piece will be performed Tuesday, September 6 at the Goldman Sachs headquarters (200 West Street in lower Manhattan) for invited guests, with a special talkback moderated by veteran television journalist Harry Smith and featuring Anne Nelson and others.

On Wednesday, September 7 the production shifts to The Museum of Jewish Heritage (36 Battery Place) for a 3pm performance for FDNY families and the public.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage will also host a special benefit performance on Thursday, September 8 for The FDNY Foundation, the official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of the New York City Fire Department. The funds raised will assist the FDNY in its mission to prevent and respond to fires, medical emergencies, disasters and terrorist acts, protecting the lives and property of residents and visitors in New York City. The FDNY Foundation funds programs to help meet the Department's training, equipment, and education needs.

For more information on THE GUYS performances, please visit www.theflea.org. To purchase tickets for the September 8 FDNY benefit performance, please visit www.fdnyfoundation.org

The Flea is located at 41 White Street between Church and Broadway, three blocks south of Canal, close to the A/C/E, N/R/Q, 6, J/M/Z and 1 subway lines. Additional information about @ The Flea can be found on The Flea’s website, www.theflea.org.

Sunday, September 4 at 7pm
Theater for the New City

While September 11, 2001 will forever be a day of national tragedy, September 12, 2001 was a day of national confusion, shock and fear. On that day and the days to follow, one young man--compelled to speak with strangers about the attacks--grabbed a simple audio recorder and hit the streets. In nine/twelve tapes, these original interviews are re-created just as they were recorded. Using analog equipment and an ensemble of actors, each of these accounts is brought to life with all the background noise and immediacy of those days intact. Equal parts time-capsule and public memoir, nine/twelve tapes gives voice to our national psyche and the beginning of our recovery.
