Today
is the first anniversary of the Katrina disaster
and a time to remember the horror of watching people
drown and/or die of thirst and exposure in a town
where tv news cameramen (and Sean Penn) could find
a way to get in but our goverment could not. Who
can forget the sight of Anderson Cooper crying in
front of the Super Dome, in total shock that there
was no help coming for the people inside (the government
must not have cable tv becuase they seem to have
been unaware of of the disaster for a few days).
It was a time when many of us lost what little bit
of innocence we still possessed; and it was the
time when President George Bush was truly exposed
as the unclothed Emperor in Hans Christian Andersen's
fairy tale, The Emperor's New Clothes or
as they say in Texas, "All hat, no head."
The
news channels have been filled with stories recounting
the flood and the pitiful recovery afterwards. But
we really don't need to be reminded because Katrina
is one of those events that no one will ever forget.
It will be remembered the way we remember 9/11 and
for those of us who are old enough, just where we
were when President John F. Kennedy was shot.

There is an interesting article
in MSNBC about an interview that Sheik Hassan Nasrallah

such a devasting war. Well, my goodness!

RIVERBANK STATE PARK
PULSE ENSEMBLE THEATRE will
again bring free Shakespeare to the open air Riverbank
State Park this summer with a multi-racial production
of “ROMEO & JULIET” directed by
the company’s Artistic Director, Alexa Kelly.
Last summer’s production of “A MIDSUMMER
NIGHT’S DREAM” attracted over 5,000
people, many of whom had never seen a Shakespeare
production before. Set in New York City today, the
90 minute production reflects the urban environment
in which it will be seen while emphasizing Shakespeare’s
universal appeal. In addition to the professional
actors, the company also includes young members
of the Harlem community ranging in age from 9 to
22. Ms. Kelly said “We are bringing professional
theatre to the community and bringing the community
into our production.” The cast features John
Williams (Romeo), Li Jun Li (Juliet), Bill Galarno
(Friar), Gwendolyn Schwinke (Nurse) and Uzo Aduba
(Mercutio). In addition to Ms. Kelly’s direction,
the choreography is by Niles Ford, Fight sequences

I have been watching Spike
Lee's Katrinia documentary, When the Levees
Broke (HBO Monday 8/21 and Tuesday 8/22 - 9-11PM
and HBO On Demand from Wednesday August 30th on).
I did not want to watch it because I did not want
to get that upset all over again, but Lee has done
an excellent job of telling the story and it is
a story we all need to know. Because if we don't
learn our history lessons, the universe always gives
us a second chance. When is not another

capable of bashing himself without any outside help.

Democratic candidate Ned Lamont has defeated Joe
Lieberman in the Connecticut Democratic Primary,
signifying a major change in the way the winds are
blowing.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14254369/
So stay tuned to see if the
Democrats can come up with a morally acceptable
way to pull out of Iraq without doing even more
to wreak the lives of the people we supposedly came
to liberate.
There was a very interesting quote in a Newsweek
article about Billy Graham in the twilight of his
life in which he talks about his decision to be
less politically involved. "He was tempted
to call President George W. Bush in the run-up to
the Iraq war to advise him on the difference between
Sunnis and Shiites, but decided against it."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14204483/
I wonder if Rev.
Graham just instinctively realized that it would
not have mattered; President Bush simply would not
have understood or for that matter cared.
And now after suffering through our "liberation,"
the poor people of Iraq are now embroiled in a horrific
civil war. And our nation needs to elect a new president,
hopefully someone with the brains to figure out
how to pull out of Iraq honorably.
But there is hope! After all, we almost elected
such a man back in 2000. Calling Al Gore!
There is also a
great article in Time (by Joshua Micah Marshall)
on how the defeat of Lieberman illustrates how the
"powers-that-be" in Washington are out
of touch with the wishes of the American people.

And here is a fun
event for tonight:
PETER NEOFOTIS
AUGUST 7th @ 8PM
DIXON PLACE "HOT! FESTIVAL"
Peter Neofotis animates three
sections of his novel, Concord, Virginia, in the
Hot! Festival at Dixon Place Monday 7 August at
8 pm. Reviving the nearly forgotten art of dramatic
panegyric, Peter Neofotis will relive three tales
from his novel, Concord, Virginia, as part of Dixon
Place's "Hot! Festival" Monday 7 August
at 8 pm. By turns comic, dramatic, and tragic, the
stories in Concord, Virginia excavate life in one
small rural Virginia town during the post World
War II era.
In the comically grotesque Southern tradition of
Carson McCullers and Flannery O'Connor, Mr. Neofotis
unfolds the panorama of a long-rooted community
one
character at a time. The tapestry grows as long-honored
harmonies of nature,
family, community, taboos, and local law confront
a seeping flood of
sanitizing modernity. Paying homage to his home
state's respect for the oral
traditions of both the ancient and Appalachian traditions,
Mr. Neofotis delivers
his tales from memory.
Tickets for Concord, Virginia
are available through theatermania.com
or by reservation at 212 219-0736.

actually made by a twenty-nine year old guy who

There is a good article in
MSNBC about the way the Bush administration has
not been "strategic." Strategic is definied
by Merriam Webster as, "of, relating to, or
marked by strategy."
"You've got
Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian territories
aflame, you've got Iraq still aflame, and you've
got the Iran issue now unresolved," said Carlos
Pascual, a senior State Department official until
this year. "It has hurt the U.S. internationally
because it has only reinforced in everyone's mind
that the U.S. was not being strategic, it was not
looking ahead to how to handle the whole panoply
of issues in a way that's both realistic and effective."

The Flight of Icarus

Hot off the Press:
Looks like some Grannies are going to be going to
jail. MSNBC just published an article about how
the Senate just passed a bill making it a crime
to transport a minor across state lines to get an
abortion. And there is no exception for counselors,
grandparents or anyone else who might legitimately
want to help a young girl.
You should read this article to the end for the
quote from one of our Republican scolds-in-chief,
Senator Tom Coburn, R-Okla.
"Abstinence is the best way to prevent teenage
pregnancy. How many people really think it's in
the best interest of young people to be sexually
active outside of marriage? Does anything positive
ever come from that?" Coburn asked.
Well, I guess more unwanted children
and later term abortions are going to "come
from that."

Back by popular demand, Dr. Lucky’s

with cabaret entertainment! In a retelling of the
history of theatre through the undervalued tradition
of burlesque, this evening will feature students
from New York University’s Undergraduate Drama
Department enrolled in “The History of American
Burlesque” performing original and historically-based
songs, dances, skits, and comedic bits in the burlesque
spirit of parody, gender inversion, and the deconstruction
of the split between highbrow and lowbrow culture.
Students will be joined by guest lecturers who also
happen to be stars of the neo-burlesque scene including
Dirty Martini, James “Tigger!” Ferguson,
Jo “Boobs” Weldon, Julie Atlas Muz,
Scotty the Blue Bunny, The World Famous Bob, and,
of course, their professor, Dr. Lynn “Lucky”

If you are a spiritually
inclined, here are two wise principles from two
of the world's oldest religions that you can ponder
as you contemplate the war between Israel and Hezollah:
The Jewish principle
of Tikkum Olam: Repair of the World
And the Qur'an (2:213): "Mankind is one single
nation."
I know there is irony
here, but there is also hope.
Hot
off the Press: Read Jonathan Alter's excellent
column in Newsweek about President Bush's veto of
a bill that would allow stem cell research. Be sure
to read all the way to the bottom of the second
page, where you will see these lines:
"In that sense, the whole issue is emblematic
of what's wrong with the Bush presidency: his inflexibility,
obsession with his conservative base, religious
arrogance and contempt for scientific consensus.
Most of all, last week's decision betrayed his oft-stated
belief in the sanctity of life. The question, as
in all moral issues, is whose life? I'll choose
yours or mine over a piece of protoplasm no larger
than the period at the end of this sentence."

Hot
off the Press: Newsweek has
just published a column by Robert Samuelson entitled
"Utterly Shameless" about the out of control
Federal Deficit (interest per year 184 billion).
http:/www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13957467/site/newsweek//.
Just in case you find these things a little boring,
here is a quick recap of our national situation:
We are embroiled in a civil war in Iraq (avoiding
such a quagmire is precisely why President Bush's
father refused to topple Sadam Hussein during the
1990-1991 Gulf War, so our President can't say this
is a surprise); Our planet is warming up with disastrous
results (See my review of the Al Gore movie - www.newyorkcool.com/archives/2006/July/film_6.htm);
And we have gone on a national bender with our "no
preset limit" national credit card, leaving
the bills for our our children and grandchildren
to pay.
As to why it should matter to us, try this: The
people who come to visit us in the nursing home
(assuming there is still a planet and some money
for nursing homes) are going to be exceedingly cross,
treating us like like the bunch of drunken profligates
we have become. They will ask us, "Didn't you
see this coming?" And we will be to
blame, not just our leaders but we the
people, the ones who elected those
leaders and did nothing to stop the resulting mess.
Sorry to be so preachy,
but reading the news these days is like watching
a horror movie.
But back to the fun stuff: If you want to stay forever
young like those red hot Mammas the Harlem Silver
Belles, here is a great party for tonight:

ALMA (soul) "All for the

that fuses live instrumentation with Brazilian grooves.
DJ True and Miller Cruz marry the traditional sounds
of samba, pagode, bossa nova to house, drum n’
bass, Latin & Afro beats – what a beautiful
union. The combination has produced quite a serious
monthly party introducing the world to their own
unique style they themselves call “Neo-Brasilian
Fusion”. They share the heart and intense
party nature of Brazilians with their patrons by
bringing back memories of old NYC, where the party
spirit was once similar to that of Brazil in many
ways.
Expect music lovers of all ethnicities

And the audience, in turn, is not allowed to heckle.

Note: We were
just notified that this event is cancelled becuase
the Parks Department double booked - this weekend
is the Siren Festival. But try it out Saturday,
July 29th on the Coney Island Boardwalk from 3PM
- 9PM.
If you are starting to plan your weekend, look at
this for Saturday:
We are bullish about day trips to Coney Island because
it's hot outside and some of us are broke and might
not fit-in in the Hamptons. Besides, Coney Island
is so out it's in.

Isn't it time to
call this mess in Iraq what it really is - a civil
war?
See: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13810844/
When we "liberated" Iraq we seem to have
unleashed centuries of hatred
between their religious sects and we did it with
no plan to curb the resulting
violence. Whatever happened to our being "welcomed
as liberators?" http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3080244/
The next time we
go to war, perhaps it would be good to consult
someone who is good at strategic military planning.
I think they study
that at Westpoint. Or even consult with someone
who knows how
to play chess - if I do this, then he/she will do
that, and then I will be
forced to do this and on and on. It really isn't
unmanly to be smart.

I just got back in town from LA and it seems there
is some kind of mess going on
in New Jersey (Surprise! Surprise!). The governor
and the legislator got in a fight
over the budget and now they have pulled their guns
from their holsters and taking
aim at their two cash cows - the lottery and the
casinos. They are closing them down because they
don't have enough money to pay the people who COLLECT
THE
MONEY! These people really need to go to AA.
Hey, I'm from Texas and I recognize drunk and disorderly
when I see it!
You
can read more about all this carrying on here -

And
now for some good news: Little Kim is out
of prison so it was a Happy

This Month: It's Doctor Donut's
Not Fourth of July Special! It's
All-American mayhem as Doctor Donut begrudgingly
celebrates the USA's
Independence Day.
Gasp! As Doctor Donut embattles
his arch-nemesis/ex-girlfriend, the chain
smoking, whiskey swilling, washed-up superhero,
USA WOMAN (Laura Sweeney)!
Delight! As Doctor Donut verbally abuses his evil
side-kick, French
pervert, MONSIEUR CROISSANT! (Fisherman)
Swoon! As Doctor Donut's burlesque beauties, THE

We are still working away on the
July edition of www.newyorkcool.com.
Here is
a photo from one of our July articles, the Snapple
event in Bryant Park. And here
is a quote from the Snaple website about what in
the world was going on: "You’ll
believe a man and a woman can fly after seeing Snapple
take “High Tea” to new
heights with the launch of the National Snapple
White Tea High Tea Tour today.
The celebration of the lightest teas on Earth kicked
off at Bryant Park from
noon – 2:00 p.m." New York Cool will
bring you more soon.
